Maryann chose to get into Avon, not for the money, but because she thought it would be something fun to do. At the time, Maryann worked a full time job and did not realize you could make more than pocket change with Avon. When Maryann’s son was born, he weighed only 2lbs, 3oz. and was nine weeks early. Because of his health issues, and because she wanted to be a stay at home mom, Maryann quit her job but knew I would have to bring more money into the household.
At that time, there was no Leadership Program so over the next several years so Maryann concentrated on building a big sales business. When she found herself going through a divorce, she realized she had to make even more money with her Avon business. The year of the divorce, Maryann had a $30 thousand dollar increase in her personal sales for that cycle!
Then the leadership program came along, she joined but stayed a Unit Leader for a very long time. Maryann was still working that $4,000 to $5,000 dollar order every two weeks! Somewhere along the line she realized that the BIG money was in Leadership. Maryann’s second husband, Ray Penn, built the Leadership Business together. They were inspired by other SEUL’s on a Council trip to Florida. They talked to them and learned they were making six figures in Leadership.
Maryann and Ray found out in order to build a large team, they had to take their eyes off of themselves, and help other people get what they wanted. One of the biggest mistakes they made was doing too much for some of their representatives. It seemed Maryann and Ray wanted it more than they did! Sound familiar? Once they found the right people who were just like them, wanted to build a business, that is when their sales team took off.
Maryann’s favorite moment ever was when one of her downline members, was able to quit both her jobs and work her Avon business full time. It was truly a dream come true for her. The good feeling it gave Maryann was out of this world, that she could help change a rep change her life for the better by offering her this opportunity, and work with her to make it happen!!!
Maryann’s advice for anyone who starts Leadership is to treat your business like a real business. Go to work every day. A business is built one step at a time. And, never give up!
